Coffee Talk with Emily Kaufman Leong of Slice of Lime Design
WC: How did you get started in the art of invitation design?
EL: I majored in graphic design and fine arts in college and was always
partial to making my own greeting cards and stationery. A family
member approached me in 2001 to create custom, handmade wedding
invitations. I had so much fun with it -- I was hooked! I continued
freelancing stationery design for friends and family and finally
incorporated myself in 2004.
WC: How is custom invitation design different from ordering your invitations
through a catalog?
EL: The major difference is that in custom invitation design, the
possibilities are truly limitless! In most major catalogs, you have
a limited range of options to choose from. With custom design, you
can have your own unique graphics created, choose from an endless
supply of different papers, mix-and-match fonts, colors and even
printing styles!
WC: What is the typical process a couple will have to go through while
designing their wedding invitations?
EL: Typically, a couple comes up with the theme or tone they want to set
for their wedding and I create something to reflect that in their
invitations. Once we've decided on a theme, we tailor the whole
invitation package to follow suit. They look through paper, type and
color choices, printing styles, custom embellishments like ribbons,
seals or flowers and layout options. As they see things they like, I
create samples for them until we've crafted the perfect invitation!
WC: Are there any common misconceptions couples have regarding custom
designing their wedding invitations?
EL: I think the most common misconception people have about custom design
is that it's very expensive. The truth is, custom design is very
reasonable! Most couples are surprised at how competitive my pricing
is. Since each client's invitation package is totally unique,
pricing is completely customized to that project. I have no set
pricing. I find out what a couple's budget is and work within that.
WC: Thus far, what was one of your most unique designs requests?
EL: One of the most unique requests I ever got was to encrust the bottom
of an invitation in pink sand and custom cut the top of the invite in
a scallop shape to reflect their beach wedding. They were having a
destination ceremony and wanted their guests to feel like part of the
beach was being brought to them!
WC: Do you service brides outside of the St. Louis area?
EL: Absolutely! I work mostly with brides in the Missouri area, but I do
the majority of my communicating via email or snail mail, so I able
to extend my reach to just about anywhere!
