Coffee Talk with Gary Wells of Gary T. Wells Photography
WC: How did you get started in photography?
GW: I became interested in photography when I was about 13. I had my own
paper route and if I sold so many new subscriptions I could earn a Polaroid
camera. So that is what I did. I loved that camera and thought I would go
broke buying film for it.
WC: What inspired you to get into the field of wedding photography?
GW: At about the same time that I won the Polaroid camera, my sister was
getting married. At her wedding I don't think I left the photographer's side.
I watched everything he did. I knew I wanted to be a photographer.
WC: What kind of photographic style are you known for?
GW: I probably have more of a traditional style, but I enjoy doing
photojournalistic photography also. I think a mixture of both makes for great
wedding memories.
WC: Do you photograph in black-and-white, color, or both? Out of the two,
which one is your favorite?
GW: I photograph in both color and black-and-white. I do not really have a
favorite, because both are appropriate for different occasions and for different
purposes.
WC: What advice do you offer to couples searching for a wedding
photographer?
GW: Meet with a few photographers and be very comfortable with the one that
you choose. Ask lots of questions and explain what type of photographs you are
wanting for your wedding and that this is the right person for the job.
WC: In your opinion, while planning their wedding, what can the
couple do to help maximize the value of the photographer at the
wedding?
GW: While planning your wedding day, keep in mind the time it takes to do
formal photographs and don't forget to account for travel time between locations.
If you do not allow enough time for the photographs it can be very frustrating,
which is exactly what you don't want on your big day.
WC: Do you photograph weddings outside of Missouri?
GW: Sure. I have done several in Las Vegas and they were a lot of fun.
