Coffee Talk with Erin Schulte of Exclusive Events, Inc.
WC: What motivated you to start your own business?
ES: I have always had a strong desire to be in control of my own destiny.
And honestly it had such a gradual formation that I have almost ended
up in the position I am in without even realizing how I got here. It
is a lot of pressure to own your own business and a little scary, but
I honestly jumped in with very little thought. My motto is really
"just do it". If I over-think something I get a headache.
WC: Can you explain to brides what you do, as event designers, and
how it is different from being strictly a wedding consultant,
florist, linen provider, etc.?
ES: We look at all the pieces of the puzzle and create an environment to
match and enhance it, whether it's fabric, lighting, or even a custom
built ceremony arch. If you have a beautiful dress and a gorgeous
cake, why would you want an unattractive or ordinary room to put them in?
WC: Event designers have become an integral part of wedding planning.
Why do you think that is?
ES: I think brides realize they can have more than just
a hall with balloons and streamers. The technology is now there to
integrate room decor into every aspect of your wedding so brides are taking
advantage of it. Overall design and how it all fits together is now becoming
just another item on the checklist. Cake, Dress, Food, Invites, Decor.....
WC: What are some of the challenges that face a modern bride planning
a wedding without an event designer?
ES: Logistics. So many times a bride will not think of lighting in their
reception tent at night. Or lack of lighting, I should say. Or the question
of if that ceremony arch will really fit through the ballroom door or if there
really is enough electrical power in the room.
WC: Do you think brides have any common misconceptions about event
designers? How do you get past them?
ES: The common misconception is that they are too expensive or they are
a great luxury only for the wealthy and celebrities. People are just
starting to realize that a little something goes a long way.
WC: Do you currently plan events outside of St. Louis, MO?
ES: We are starting to branch out a bit more. And we are very open to
events outside of St. Louis.
WC: Based on your years of experience designing events and weddings,
what advice would you give to a planning bride?
ES: Know thyself. Don't get over your head, and set limits
for yourself. Make sure you have not only a realistic budget, but a
priority list of items involving your wedding. What is most
important to you? Hire a reputable wedding coordinator, even if it is
only for one day of coordinating. These people know the vendors and
know what items should cost. It would be so worth it.
