Q: Why should we register?

A: First, registering helps you fill your first home with the things you need and want. It also makes shopping much easier for your guests. Finally, registries help to reduce the number of duplicate gifts. And, if you do receive two identical gifts, registering makes it easier to return an item and receive a merchandise credit.

Q: When do we begin?

A:You can begin the registering process as soon as you've set your wedding date. Registry consultants recommend about four to six months prior to the wedding. Keep in mind that you'll have showers and other pre-wedding celebrations where you'll be receiving gifts. Don't wait until the last minute to begin registering. You should definitely have completed your registry by the time the wedding invitations are sent out.

When you begin your registry, you will meet with a professionally trained bridal registry consultant. She will be there to walk you through the process.

Q: What should we register for?

A: There are many magazines and wedding planning websites that have gift registry checklists. Your registry consultant can also give you ideas based on your wants and needs. You can begin by taking stock in the items you and your fiancé already have. Then, start a wishlist of items that you need and want.

Q: Where should we register?

A: Once you've put your wish list together, you may want to begin researching what stores will carry the items you'd like to receive. Many couples register at one major department store and a few specialty shops. We've put together a list of ten great places to register in the St. Louis area. Call ahead and find out if the store requires you to set an appointment for your first visit.

Registering should be fun. It's definitely an activity you and your fiancé can do together. Remember that you both have to live with the items you receive. Take your time registering--you can always add to your registry.

Choose a variety of price ranges. This allows guests to shop within their budget. Plus, you'll want to have enough items for your showers and wedding. A general rule is to keep within the $25-$75 range. However, you shouldn't neglect the lower and higher priced items.

Q: How do I get the word out?

A: Tell your family and close friends where you have registered--they will spread the word. Many stores will also provide you with a small card you can keep handy in case someone asks. These cards can also be inserted in shower invitations. Etiquette experts say it is not polite to include registry information with or on your invitation.

Q: How do I keep track of everything?

A: Most department stores and specialty shops keep track of your gift registry electronically. Since most couples register at a few places, it's a good idea to keep track of all the gifts you have received. Many wedding planning books have sample sheets to use or you can create your own. Be sure to include the following information: gift item, received by, giver's address, store name and date received. You should also make note of when a thank you note is sent.

What's the best way to complete our registry if we haven't received everything? Many stores will offer discounts to you so you can complete your registry after the wedding. Some offer a one-time percentage off—others offer a no--or low--interest plan. Ask your registry consultant for details.

Q:When do I send thank you notes?

A:Thank you notes should be sent promptly—within three months of receiving a gift. It's important to keep up with notes as gifts are received. Involve your husband-to-be—he can write notes to his family and friends and you can do the same. Make your notes as personal as you can. Tell the giver how you are using the gift.
