These days, many modern and traditional couples consider Cozumel one of the most romantic wedding
destinations. Some couples want a destination that is full of activities and others seek the relaxation
of a beautiful beach and a lovely, accommodating hotel. Cozumel has all of this to offer plus more.
Romance could simply be a hand-in-hand stroll along the water's edge as you bask in the memories
of the day or week gone by. Fall in love all over again at a waterfront or open-air restaurant. Race
your horses down a secluded beach, then have a sexy picnic for two. Discover for yourself how Cozumel
can be a simply wonderful romantic experience.
Cozumel, with all of its varied attractions, is truly unique among all the islands in the Caribbean.
Could it be the lush tropical surroundings, crystal white beaches, and perfectly clear waters? This
island of Mayan/Spanish culture manages to provide couples with all of this while still maintaining
the tranquility, peacefulness, and safety of a small, unspoiled island paradise. Let's go explore.
C'mon!
Cozumel is Mexico's largest island, stretching 32 miles long and nine miles wide; and is just 12
miles off the Yucatán coast. With more than 20 miles of reefs offshore (second largest reef in the world),
Cozumel has the most spectacular diving and snorkeling in Mexico. It's no wonder Jacques Cousteau,
French oceanographer, considered this one of the world's best diving sites. Other aqua activities include
parasailing, submarine excursions, sport fishing, windsurfing, swimming with dolphins, water skiing, sailing,
jet skiing, and swimming. Now just add some coral white beaches for relaxing, sunset walks, and shell-seeking
missions to your to-do list and you will begin to see that this island is a sea of paradise.
But, you know, it doesn't stop with the incredible blue/green waters. You can also enjoy some fun
dry-land activities such as horseback riding, jungle tours (via dune buggy or ATV), mini golf, a Cozumel
museum, Celarain Lighthouse, exploring ruins, or just hop in your own convertible and explore, explore,
explore! Soon you'll see a golf course and a bicycle path along the coastline.
For those who are hungry after all these activities, you'll find an incredibly delectable variety of
restaurants to satisfy just about everyone's taste buds: Italian, Louisiana Cajun, Caribbean, International,
American, and of course Mexican. All this in one place that is just 32 miles long! Just remember, your
authentic Mexican cuisine is not just tacos, enchiladas, burritos, and fajitas any more, although they
are available, but now you'll also find shrimp, fish, and lobster prepared Yucatán style. The
diversity of the menus is astounding. So sit back and relax in the cool breezes, because many of the
restaurants are open air and/or air-conditioned, with prices ranging from inexpensive to moderately expensive.
But hey, it's your honeymoon -- splurge a bit!
When you're ready for a break from all the sun and fun, take a stroll through the unique shops in the
only city on the island, lovely San Miguel. Much of merchandise is home-made in Cozumel or the
Yucatán; other goods are from other parts of Mexico. Either way you're getting authentic Mexican.
Expect to find beautiful handmade blankets, unique wall hangings, pottery, stoneware, wonderful Mayan
art and silver pieces, hammocks, perfume, jewelry, leather products, and T-shirts just to name a few.
For you sports fanatics, there is also a sports stadium for you to get your fix.
If it's day-tripping you want, Cozumel's close proximity to the mainland offers many opportunities.
Walk or wed amid Mayan ruins in Tulum, Coba, or Chichén-Itzá. Tulum is the only Mayan city to be
built along the coastline; enjoy spectacular views at Chichén-Itzá from the top of El Castillo, a
pyramid rising over 24 meters; Coba is not quite as developed but does boast the tallest pyramid on
the Peninsula at 42 meters! Water attractions on the way to Tulum are Xel-Ha and Xcaret. Xel-Ha is an
exceptionally beautiful place to snorkel and swim. Xcaret is a 150 acre developed nature park that
has an underground river float, snorkeling, and dolphins. You gotta see this!
If it's beautiful beaches with a Euro flare you're looking for, pay a visit to Playa del Carmen.
But, if after your vows are said, you're ready to party hardy, it's "livin' la vida loca" in
Cancún. For a soothing and memorable evening, take in San Miguel as it comes alive with a
little "Rock 'n Roll", or snuggle together as you listen and watch the strolling musicians play romantic
Mexican classics. While still strolling hand-in-hand in the plaza, notice the talented local spray paint
artists. They will amaze you with their creative painting techniques and some awesome designs. On Sunday
evenings, everyone from local families dressed to the nines to the visitors from all over the world gather together
in the central plaza to enjoy the authentic live music and dancing the city has to offer. Many of the
bars and restaurants offer great live reggae and salsa entertainment; still others have disco night!
Now it is time to ask yourself, "Is this the fun and romantic wedding destination I've always dreamed
about?" La Isla Bonita! "Beautiful Island".
